Trudeau government silent on wind farm noise

In sworn testimony at an environmental review tribunal, a Health Canada official confirmed industrial wind turbines — large, noise-emitting devices — are regulated by the Radiation Emitting Devices Act. So why isn’t it responding to hundreds of citizen complaints?

The federal government’s inaction on wind turbine noise is making Canadians sick.

It’s been a year-and-a-half since Health Canada’s $2-million study determined low-frequency acoustic waves from industrial wind turbines cause community annoyance.
According to the World Health Organization, unwanted noise, even at a moderate level, can lead to a myriad of adverse health outcomes, including stress-related symptoms such as sleep disturbance, elevated blood pressure, cardiac events and depression.
It’s a “green” form of radiation sickness.
Canada’s Radiation Emitting Devices Act (REDA) is supposed to regulate the design and operation of devices that emit radiation, such as microwave ovens and tanning beds. In sworn testimony at an environmental review tribunal, a Health Canada official confirmed industrial wind turbines — large, noise-emitting devices — are regulated by REDA.
REDA requires a manufacturer or importer of such a device to “forthwith notify the Minister” upon becoming aware its device is emitting radiations not necessary for the performance of its function.
On June 15, Barbara Ashbee of Mulmur, Ontario, together with hundreds of other Ontarians, sent an open letter to Health Minister Jane Philpott, asking why Health Canada has not insisted wind energy corporations report citizen complaints about noise radiation. She wants the minister to meet with her and representatives of citizens suffering from turbine noise radiations.
Ashbee wrote: “Many in Ontario and elsewhere have logged serious health complaints with proponents/operators of wind turbine projects, provincial and federal government ministries as well as wind turbine manufacturers … As previous ministers and current Minister Philpott have been informed, the adverse effects of wind turbines are not trivial.”
Access to Information records indicate wind energy corporations have reported no complaints.
Why is Health Canada not forcing wind turbine operators to report citizen complaints, as required?
Is the wind industry lobby that strong?
Why were Canadians not told wind turbine corporations are required to report citizen complaints to Health Canada? Were wind energy companies also not told about the REDA?
Why did Health Canada’s Wind Turbine Noise and Health study exclude people under age 18 and over age 79, the most vulnerable segments of Canada’s population?
Why do REDA regulations not include standards for the design and operation of wind turbines, as they do for microwave ovens, etc.?
Prior to the 2015 federal election, Canadians for Radiation Emission Enforcement (CFREE) asked candidates in wind turbine-affected Ontario ridings: “Will you support a moratorium on new wind turbines within 2 km of residences, until REDA regulations are updated to clearly stipulate wind turbine operators must comply with REDA, and to include scientifically proven safe setback distances?”
The survey revealed equal support from candidates of all four parties for a wind turbine moratorium. Only three candidates opposed it, but none were elected. In Ontario, the turbine setback is only 550 meters from residences.
Other countries are extending setbacks to safer distances. In Poland, the setback is now ten times turbine height. In closely settled Bavaria, it is now two kilometres. But there is no such action from Health Canada. No moratorium. No change in setbacks. No standards in REDA. More wind projects are planned. More Canadians are getting sick.
Openness and transparency are supposedly important to the federal Liberal government.
What will Prime Minister Justin Trudeau do about Health Canada’s inaction on wind turbines?

As I work in Toronto, I take the Go Train from Burlington. There was Liberal Candidate (at the time) Karina Gould.
She is a young woman, University educated with a nice, genuine smile and the appearance of a caring person. Most people were avoiding contact in their race to stand on their particular square of concrete to await the train’s arrival.
But people interest me more than my square, so I walked against the flow to engage her. After exchanging greetings, I asked her if she was aware of the issue of people impacted by Industrial scale wind turbines. She asked for more info and I provided it. She said “Those are under provincial juridiction…” and I said “but the Radiation Emitting Devices Act, which gave Health Canada the authority to launch the HC WT study gives the Federal Government jurisdiction…” I asked her to look into that.
About a month later, we had the exact same conversation. I had the same conversation with a NDP candidate and my MP! I have also written letters.
That is why I particularly appreciate what WCO and Barb Ashbee are doing here. We require a sufficient mass behind these calls and it must be maintained. The HC study has been misrepresented in many forums, including by CBC whose timeline of wisdom started with “No issues caused in people by wind turbines” to later “wind turbine noise linked to only 1 health issue – annoyance”… It seems as if the slow release of reports may be intended to maximize media impact over time. (Making it reusable in a way.)
If we keep shaking this tree, truths will fall out.
Meanwhile in West Lincoln, we had our first Public Advisory Committee on wind turbines meeting. It will be some months prior to proposals being made, but it is a start and I appreciate the time of each and every person in that room.
Thank you. Well done and please keep at it.
    Mike

I wrote a letter to Justin Trudeau, when he was the Liberal leader regarding the enforcement of the REDA, as it pertains to industrial wind turbines and he actually responded saying that he could not comment on it because it would be overstepping Premier Wynne’s leadership in Ontario.
      I was not impressed.
I agree that he needs to hear from all of us about enforcing the REDA.
We all need to make public his responses to our requests regarding this crucially important Federal responsibility.

This is an interesting time, with Ontario’s flawed proposed noise regulations for wind turbine noise emissions and the federal government’s commitment to clean energy. Both need to ensure that the health of the public is protected while developing and enacting policy.

A 50% pledge by 2025 was made by Canada this past week in Ottawa.
Maybe they had too much to drink by the time this was signed?
Guess who’s back this is going to fall on?

Pretty sure the Ole Katty Wyndds Grey Energy Act trumps REDA (Radiation Emitting Devices Act) … look it up in the liberal hand book…. chapter 7 ironically…….
” how to dismantle a democracy ” The Grey Energy Act supercedes all Acts…..
    Endanger Species Act….
    Heritage Act…
    Great Lakes Act…
    Niagra Act…
And so on and so forth….
We’re all sitting here going wow that’ll stop them dead in their tracks….. then bam….. liberals proclaim the Grey Energy Act shall supercede REDA because it’s for the good of the people….. I gotta go…..
I have pitchfork practice at 3….

Correct Andre. … in the USA right now they are passing laws that make it illegal to question the government science or authority on global warming…… ..
In Canada in the near future if you speak out or against the Grey Energy Act then you too may face prosecution for going against our all knowing and seeing government. …… they will come for us in the night…. in a black van… a black electric van of course!!!!
