Toronto area resident and photographer Gord Benner took a circle tour of Lake Superior this summer and was astonished to see the damage being done by wind “farm” construction in Ontario’s formerly pristine North, especially the iconic Algoma region which was so often the subject of paintings done by the Group of Seven. The Algoma region attracts visitors from around the world.
Today, Benner says, they will see roads and transmission lines, and turbines to generate power where before there was Nature.
Benner writes:
“We started the Lake Superior Circle Tour at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and proceeded clockwise through Wisconsin and Minnesota. Didn’t see any wind turbines until after we entered Ontario. The IWTs [industrial wind turbines] installed near Dorion were not visible from the highway, but sure enough, there they were along the most scenic section of the Trans Canada Highway 17, from Lake Superior Provincial Park south to Sault Ste. Marie. Cottages and camps that we visited at Bow, Negick and Trim Lakes were surrounded by these huge machines.
“Sadly, nature, tourism and Group of Seven landscapes are taking a real beating.”
With woodlands cut away, and hilltops blasted flat, the damage caused by wind “farm” construction will be irreversible.

As ugly and useless as an Ontario Liberal. They proved there real worth when they were needed during the hot spell. All hot air and no value like Wynne, McGuinty, Chiarelli and associates….

To see the destruction of the landscape is very sad indeed.
I am a high school teacher in southern Ontario currently home on a medical leave. I will not be returning to the classroom in the fall.
I have a lakeview home of many years on the shore of Lake Erie. It now sits empty. In 2008 Aim PowerGen, CEO Mike Crawley (since has held position of president of the Federal Liberal Party), developed a wind farm; consisting of 18 1.65 Vesta industrial wind turbines, NASA has documented the negative impact on human health decades ago, yet our government continues to deny the harm and destruction it brings to those living to close to industrial wind turbines.
Now that I am away from the turbines, I no longer vomit and bleed profusely. Lesions that developed in my brain have healed considerably. However, I do live with a brain anneurism.
As with cancer, allergies to bee stings, asthma; not everyone is effected by low frequencies. The time I am able to spend in the vicinity of industrial wind turbines is very minimal before I become very lethargic, severely impaired and blood pressure spiking to the 180/150 range.
Relationships with family and neighbors have been destroyed. Finances are very tight.
Mike Crawley is aware of the devastation brought to my community, yet we continue to be ignored.
I suggest the turbines be placed in the Liberal ridings, starting with Toronto.
Such a huge waste of taxpayers money; such a burden to our children. The money would have been much appreciated in the health and education fields.
How about that transparency Kathleen; along with that will be disclosure of the corruption and crimes committed by our Liberal government. We can thank Dalton McGuinty for that.
It’s high time for those responsible be held accountable. Will McGuinty go AWOL again when the heat is on? Jail cells are a little less comfortable than a crib in the Kawarthas…
