The Ontario government repealed the Green Energy and Green Economy Act in 2019, which returned siting powers to municipal governments. Many municipalities in Ontario demanded these changes.
Local government may now enact their own zoning bylaws with regard to setback distances and noise limits. Municipalities are being told that they still cannot say No to a wind power project; this is false.
Municipal Support is now mandatory for any wind power project to proceed. The next procurement for wind power began in June, 2025; deadline for proposals is mid-October, which means municipal support must be sought before then.

NO LOCAL GROUP? MAKE ONE!
New community groups are forming all the time, especially when a proposal for a new industrial wind power or battery storage site comes forward.
Here’s some advice:
Create an email group using Google or Yahoo, whatever works. Then add names of interested people to it, and keep in touch, often.
Create a group name: make it simple and to the point. If you are opposing a single project, it’s ok to use that project name, but if you think more proposals might come along, a more general name will work. A number of people have used the title “Concerns” because it is open.
Plan to make a presentation to your local municipal council. Use our Impacts page for content. Keep it brief and to the point. Key issues are land use conflict, loss of agricultural land, noise pollution, risk to wildlife and aquifers, etc. Need help? contact@windconcernsontario.ca
Don’t blame the landowners: it may be tempting to blame those who have signed leases, but the wind power developer land agents can be very persuasive. Often, landowners regret their decision. You cannot interfere once they have signed though, that’s contractual interference and illegal. The Ontario Federation of Agriculture document is very informative, find it on our Impacts page.
Signs work!!! Contact us for the design for the STOP the wind turbines signs you can use with your local printer. Add your group name!
You’re not alone: there are now 159 Unwilling Host municipalities in Ontario, most of them communities that already have wind turbines. They’re saying No, because they know!!!
